If you're clearing waste from a site in Essex or London, the first decision is usually the same: grab hire or a skip? Both remove waste, but they work very differently — and for most jobs a grab lorry is the faster, cheaper option.
What's the difference?
A skip is dropped off, filled by hand over hours or days, then collected. Grab hire sends an 8-wheel lorry with a hydraulic grab arm that loads the waste itself in minutes and drives it away the same visit. One grab lorry holds up to 16 tonnes — roughly twice a standard 8-yard skip.
Cost
Because one grab load replaces two skips and there's no council permit to pay for, grab hire usually works out cheaper per tonne — especially on soil, hardcore and heavy muck that quickly maxes out a skip's weight limit.
Access and permits
A skip on the public road needs a council permit and lighting. A grab loads from the roadside and leaves immediately, so no permit is required. The 7-metre arm also reaches over walls, fences and hedges, so the waste never has to be carried to the kerb.
The verdict
For most construction, landscaping and renovation jobs across Essex & London, grab hire is faster, permit-free and better value. Call Dave on 07903 280097 for a free comparison quote.
